The Trump phenomenon's most illuminating and characteristic instances – not its most important, nor cruelest, nor most threatening, nor stupidest, but potentially its most enlightening – came earlier this autumn. In the course of several weeks, the American president started showing everyone his plans for a gilded ballroom two times larger of the White House and then commenced independently demolishing the East Wing portion to erect it.
He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the present calculation of casualties resulting from his reductions to foreign assistance stands at 600,000 and growing, and this week research projected his energy policies would result in fatalities an additional 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No other president would have dared – really, no other president would have imagined – independently wrecking significant portions of the executive mansion in order to erect a Versailles-style party room, with the direct cooperation of numerous America's wealthiest, nearly all of which conduct transactions with federal agencies.
We transitioned from 'the meek shall inherit the world' toward 'the humble will perish from cholera'
As disorienting as it is to observe the president try to upend the traditional concept of democracy and exchange it with its direct contrary, there exists a significant segment among Americans who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. This includes individuals like us – in older age cohorts almost a majority – who were raised as conventional Protestant believers.
We have observed over the years as politically conservative religious groups turned the Jesus we grew up with into the total contrary of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they turned a figure of affection into an icon of hostility who approves specifically the brutality that he criticized in the Gospel; this transformation occurred more gradually, over decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless unsettling through similar means, a confusing personal impact for numerous individuals.
A Damaging Christianity Takes Hold
Hence I shall explain the Savior from my upbringing, as conceptually Christ is the focus of Christian religion, and since the rapidly expanding group among Americans may possess limited understanding regarding him because they identify as skeptics or agnostics or spiritual independents. I have no problem with these various perspectives, nor with any other faith; yet I maintain that there are pearls of great price within Christian narrative.
It is decidedly not the story of a powerful ruler appearing; conversely, a child comes into the world to parents without shelter in an automotive shelter, who are forced to hastily depart to a foreign land to evade secret police. The infant develops in modest conditions, a working carpenter; his doctrine is about love for fellow humans, particularly for the disadvantaged – not merely emotional affection, but practical compassion, expressed by feeding and housing. Jesus' answer to hostility is to turn the opposite cheek – not as a demonstration of compliant endurance, but as a method to teach the assailant; his method regarding offenses states that when a person pilfers your jacket you ought to provide them your pullover too.
The obvious and straightforward truth that the Jesus of the gospels calls for a type of radical love focused on the needy is what has always made the Christian faith something of a provocative belief system: engaging for the masses, but because of its intrinsic extremism requiring to be controlled. In the 1950s it was controlled by dilution – The Protestant faith was so dominant that it basically baptized the status quo.
A Battle for the Highest Among Us
Hence I have become inspired to observe the persistent defiance to Trump develop in this past year. It has been significant comfort to participate in developing the initiative that has taken to the streets through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired voters to turn out in significant amounts in interim political contests. We will need to continue it, and with identical determination, featuring US banners at every demonstration and calls to the highest qualities in US history.
We will be questioned ... how did you receive the foreigner? Did you welcome them and embrace them or reject?
America is best defended, essentially, by reference to the best within national tradition, just as Christianity is best defended by relationship to elements that cause it to be unique and magnificent, which is the example of Jesus. In all circumstances does it imply feigning the most negative of both America and Christian faith was nonexistent; it represents both humility and faith, a combination that genuine US believers should be comfortable with.
