The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
